This 100 piastres banknote was issued in French Indochina during the period 1942-1945, a particularly troubled era marked by the Japanese occupation of the Indochinese peninsula. It bears the letter A, which constitutes a characteristic identification element of this issue, making it possible to distinguish the different series put into circulation by the Banque de l'Indochine.
One of the most notable features of this banknote is its cancellation by perforation. This technique involved physically piercing the banknote with a specific tool in order to permanently withdraw it from monetary circulation. Banknotes thus perforated were generally drawn from stocks returned to the issuing bank or from undistributed reserves. This perforation therefore represents an official administrative mark attesting to the legal withdrawal of the banknote from legal tender, while preserving the visual integrity of the document as a whole.
The Indochinese piastre was the official currency of French Indochina, a territory encompassing Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The Banque de l'Indochine, a private institution holding the privilege of note issuance, was responsible for the production and management of these banknotes. During the period 1942-1945, the conditions of printing and distribution of banknotes were profoundly affected by the constraints of the Second World War and the presence of Japanese forces on the territory.
