Description

This 50 centimes note was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne (Carcassonne Chamber of Commerce) on 2 March 1920. It is part of the context of emergency currency issues that proliferated in France in the aftermath of the First World War, a period during which the shortage of small change forced many chambers of commerce to produce their own local means of payment.

French chambers of commerce were indeed authorised to issue emergency notes and vouchers in order to compensate for the lack of metallic coinage in circulation. These local issues, although provisional, played an essential economic role in everyday transactions at a regional and municipal level. The Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne, located in the Aude department, was among those institutions that resorted to this mechanism to facilitate commercial transactions in the region.

The specimen presented bears the annotation « ANNULÉ » (CANCELLED), meaning it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuing authority. This annotation, generally applied by stamping or perforation, was a common administrative procedure used to permanently neutralise a note and prevent any fraudulent reuse. The presence of this mention constitutes an important documentary piece of information regarding the monetary status of this note.

From a preservation standpoint, this type of emergency note is made on paper, an inherently fragile medium, which explains the relative rarity of specimens that have survived to the present day in good condition. The precisely indicated issue date of 2 March 1920 places this note in the final phase of French emergency currency issues, which were progressively withdrawn as the national monetary situation stabilised during the 1920s.
