Banknote Billet France 50 centimes 1917

Remarks:

Délibération: 25-07-1917

This 50 centimes note was issued in 1917 by the Chambre de Commerce de Chalon-sur-Saône, Autun et Louhans, in the context of the First World War. During this period, the shortage of metallic currency, linked in particular to the needs of the war effort, forced many French chambers of commerce to issue emergency banknotes in order to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation. These local issues, authorised by the authorities, provided a temporary solution to ensure daily commercial transactions.

The Chambre de Commerce de Chalon-sur-Saône, Autun et Louhans brought together several territories of Saône-et-Loire, and its fiduciary issue reflects the regional economic organisation of the time. This type of emergency banknote is today a direct testament to the monetary difficulties experienced by France during the world conflict.

The presented example bears the ANNULÉ (CANCELLED) stamp, indicating that it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuer. This cancellation procedure was common when banknotes were recalled at the end of their validity period or when metallic currency was reintroduced into circulation. The presence of this marking guarantees that the note is no longer legal tender and that it was not fraudulently put back into circulation after its withdrawal.

Emergency banknotes from this period, particularly those bearing a cancellation mark, are today sought after by collectors specialising in French First World War numismatics and regional economic history. Their state of preservation is of particular importance given the ephemeral nature of the paper medium used in their manufacture.
