This 50 centimes note was issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Eure-et-Loir on 1st October 1915, in the midst of the First World War. During this conflict, the shortage of metallic currency led to a significant monetary crisis in France, prompting many local chambers of commerce to issue their own emergency notes in order to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation.

French Chambers of Commerce were thus authorised to produce small denomination notes to meet the needs of daily commercial exchanges. These local issues, although provisional in their conception, sometimes lasted several years, bearing witness to the economic and monetary difficulties experienced by France during this troubled period.

The department of Eure-et-Loir, located in the Centre-Val de Loire region, had its own chamber of commerce which took charge of the organisation and distribution of these emergency notes throughout its territory. These local fiduciary documents now constitute precious historical testimonies regarding the economic organisation of France in wartime.

This note has a face value of 50 centimes and clearly displays the issue date of 1st October 1915. It weighs 1 gram, which corresponds to the light characteristics typical of paper notes of this era. These regional emergency issues are today sought after by collectors specialising in notaphily, particularly those with an interest in French First World War issues or monetary documents of a regional and local nature.

Collecting these chamber of commerce notes makes it possible to reconstruct a complete panorama of the various local issues that circulated throughout French territory between 1914 and 1922, a period during which these substitute monetary instruments played an essential role in maintaining local economic exchanges.
