Description

This 50 centimes note was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Cette, dated 11 August 1915, bearing the series AM 138. It is part of the particular context of the First World War, a period during which French chambers of commerce were authorised to issue emergency notes to offset the shortage of small change caused by the hoarding of metal coins.

The town of Cette, now known as Sète, in the Hérault department, had an active chamber of commerce whose local fiduciary issue met the immediate needs of the region's commercial exchanges. These emergency notes, also known as local paper currencies or chamber of commerce notes, circulated strictly at a local and regional level.

This type of numismatic document is of significant historical interest, bearing witness to the economic and administrative organisation of France in wartime. The reference to series AM 138 makes it possible to identify this note precisely within the issuer's overall production, thus facilitating its classification and authentication by specialists and collectors.

The note displays a face value of 50 centimes, corresponding to a low-denomination banknote intended to facilitate everyday transactions. The year of issue, 1915, places this note squarely in the period of national mobilisation, making it a direct witness to the monetary adaptations imposed by the world conflict. These local issues generally ceased progressively from 1922 onwards, when the Banque de France took back full control of French fiduciary circulation.
