Délibération: 16-08-1915

This 50 centimes note was issued in 1915 by the Chambre de Commerce de Blois, in the department of Loir-et-Cher, in France. It was issued in the context of the First World War, a period during which the shortage of metallic currency led many French chambers of commerce to issue their own emergency notes to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation.

This type of issue, commonly known as emergency currency or chamber of commerce note, was intended to ensure the continuity of local commercial exchanges when metal coins ran short, particularly due to hoarding by the population or their use for military purposes.

The presented example bears the mention « ANNULÉ » (CANCELLED), indicating that it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuing authority. This cancellation practice was common at the end of the issuing period in order to prevent any fraudulent reuse of withdrawn notes. This mention may appear in the form of a stamp, a perforation, or an overprint directly applied to the note.

Chamber of commerce notes from this era were generally printed on paper and displayed graphic elements specific to the issuing institution, including the name of the chamber, the face value, the year of issue, as well as various legal notices and serial numbers. The Chambre de Commerce de Blois thus produced several different denominations to meet local needs, of which this 50 centimes is one.

This note represents a historical and documentary testimony of local monetary organisation during the Great War, illustrating the economic adaptations implemented by French regional institutions in response to the constraints imposed by the conflict.
