Description
This 50 centimes note was issued by the Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne on 23 November 1914. It was produced in the particular context of the early First World War, a period during which the shortage of metallic currency in circulation led many French chambers of commerce to issue their own emergency notes in order to compensate for the lack of cash and to facilitate local commercial transactions.
This type of paper money, commonly known as an emergency note or necessity currency, was a temporary solution put in place by authorised local institutions to address the economic emergency of the time. The Chambre de Commerce de Carcassonne, like many other similar institutions across France, thus assumed an exceptional monetary role by producing these small face-value denominations intended for everyday transactions.
The presented example bears the mention CANCELLED, indicating that it was officially withdrawn from circulation and invalidated by the issuing institution. This annotation, generally applied by perforation, stamp or overprint, was intended to prevent any fraudulent reuse of the note once its period of validity had expired. Notes cancelled in this way hold significant documentary and historical interest, bearing witness to the administrative procedures of monetary management of the period.
