This 50 centimes note was issued in 1914 by the Chambre de Commerce de Marseille (Marseille Chamber of Commerce), as part of the local monetary issues that proliferated in France at the beginning of the First World War. Faced with a shortage of metallic currency, many French chambers of commerce took the initiative of issuing their own emergency notes, intended to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation.
The Marseille Chamber of Commerce was one of the most active institutions in this field, producing various denominations to meet the needs of local commercial exchanges. This note belongs to series 20-R, a designation that allowed, at the time, the identification and classification of different issues within the same face value, thereby facilitating the administrative and accounting management of these payment instruments.
As an emergency note, this paper document represents an important historical testimony of the troubled period that France was going through in 1914. These local issues were generally designed for circulation limited to a specific geographical area, in this case the Marseille region, and were accepted by local merchants and craftsmen as part of their daily transactions.
The face value of 50 centimes made it an intermediate denomination, suited to small retail trade transactions. These emergency notes issued by chambers of commerce are today sought-after collectibles among numismatists and historians, due to their ephemeral nature and the particular economic and historical context in which they were produced and used.
