Description

The 5-franc note from the town of Carvin, issued in 1915, belongs to the category of local monetary issues produced in France during the First World War. Faced with shortages of fiduciary currency caused by the conflict, many French municipalities and chambers of commerce were forced to put their own means of payment into circulation in order to compensate for the lack of cash in circulation.

This necessity note, belonging to series C, bears witness to the local administrative and economic organisation put in place by the commune of Carvin, located in the Pas-de-Calais department, a region particularly affected by the economic and human upheavals of the war. The issuance of such notes made it possible to maintain a minimum level of commercial activity among the civilian population despite the monetary disruptions of the time.

From a numismatic point of view, this type of document constitutes a direct testimony to the emergency monetary practices adopted at the local level in France between 1914 and 1918. Municipal necessity notes from this period are today sought after by collectors specialising in war currency and French regional paper money, owing to their historical character and their typographical and graphic diversity from one town to another.

This note has a face value of 5 francs, which made it a significant denomination for everyday transactions of the time. Its belonging to an identified series, here series C, indicates that the issue was produced in several distinct series, suggesting a volume of production adapted to the local monetary needs of the commune during this period of crisis.
