Description
The 25 centimes note from the City of Epernay, issued on 5 September 1914, is a remarkable example of local emergency currency produced at the very beginning of the First World War. This type of fiduciary document, known as a "necessity note" or "emergency currency", was put into circulation in response to the shortage of metallic currency caused by the wartime context, which led to the hoarding of coins and a profound disruption of ordinary monetary circuits.
The city of Epernay, located in the Marne department in France, was one of the many French municipalities and chambers of commerce to issue this type of note to offset the lack of liquidity in local circulation. These issues were generally authorised by municipal authorities and represented a commitment by the issuing community to reimburse the face value stated on the document.
This note displays a face value of 25 centimes, making it a low-denomination note intended to facilitate small everyday transactions within the local population. The issue date of 5 September 1914 is particularly significant, as it corresponds to the very first months of the global conflict, a period during which economic and monetary disruptions were especially intense in regions close to the front, such as the Marne.
Its preservation in a near-original condition is a decisive factor in its numismatic and historical valuation. These municipal necessity notes are today direct witnesses to the economic and social history of France in wartime, and attract sustained interest from collectors specialising in notaphily.
