The 20 francs Debussy banknote is an issue from the Banque de France dating from 1997, belonging to series E.051. It pays tribute to Claude Debussy (1862-1918), one of the most iconic French composers of the turn of the 20th century and a key figure of musical impressionism.
This banknote with a face value of 20 francs features on the obverse a portrait of Claude Debussy, accompanied by graphic elements evoking his musical and artistic world. The design references his most celebrated work, La Mer, with aquatic and undulating motifs characteristic of impressionist aesthetics. The composer's name and signature also appear on this side. On the reverse, the imagery follows the same musical and artistic theme, with visual references to the score and Debussy's sonic universe.
This banknote illustrates the graphic design work carried out under the artistic direction of the Banque de France, which chose to honour French cultural figures through its banknote denominations. The 20 francs Debussy series was put into circulation from 1980, with several years of issue produced until the introduction of the euro in 2002. The example presented here corresponds to the 1997 issue.
It incorporates several security features typical of Banque de France banknotes of this generation, including a watermark depicting the portrait of Debussy, a security thread, as well as specific inks and printing techniques designed to combat counterfeiting.
