The 2 francs banknote issued by the Chambre de Commerce d'Agen is a remarkable example of emergency currency produced in France at the beginning of the First World War. Dated 5 November 1914 and bearing serial number 134,044, this fiduciary document bears witness to the monetary upheavals brought about by the conflict of 1914-1918.

From the very first months of the war, the massive hoarding of metallic coins caused a severe shortage of small change in circulation. Faced with this situation, French Chambers of Commerce were authorised to issue their own emergency banknotes in order to make up for this shortage and maintain local commercial exchanges. The Chambre de Commerce d'Agen, an institution representing the economic interests of the department of Lot-et-Garonne, was one of the many chambers to resort to this exceptional measure.

This 2 francs note displays the typical characteristics of issues from this period, with an explicit mention of the issuing authority and the face value clearly indicated. The individualised serial number ensured rigorous tracking of notes in circulation and helped prevent the risk of counterfeiting. Its date of issue, written in full or in figures according to the typography specific to each chamber, precisely anchors this document in the historical context of autumn 1914.

These emergency banknotes, although designed as a temporary solution, sometimes remained in circulation well beyond the first years of the conflict. Today they represent a valuable documentary source for economic historians and are highly sought-after collectibles among specialists in French numismatics and notaphily.
