Description

The 1 Franc Municipal Bond of the City of Carvin, issued in 1915, is a necessity note produced during the First World War. This type of substitute currency was put into circulation by French municipal authorities in a context of severe monetary shortage, caused by the massive hoarding of metal coins and the economic disruptions brought about by the conflict.

The city of Carvin, a municipality in the Pas-de-Calais department located in a region severely affected by the fighting and occupation, was among the many municipalities forced to issue their own means of payment to compensate for the lack of official fiduciary currency in circulation. These municipal bonds had local legal tender status and helped maintain commercial exchanges within the community.

This note has a face value of 1 Franc, the French monetary unit in use at the time. It is part of a series of municipal bonds characteristic of French emergency currency production during the period 1914-1918, which saw hundreds of communes, chambers of commerce and various institutions issue necessity notes in a wide range of formats, denominations and graphic designs.

From a numismatic perspective, these local issues constitute valuable historical testimonies of the wartime economic organisation at the municipal level. The municipal bonds of Carvin, like those of other cities in northern France, are of particular importance due to the geographical and historical context of their issue, as the region was the scene of intense military operations throughout the conflict.

This type of fiduciary document is today sought after by collectors specialising in French necessity currency from the First World War, as well as by historians interested in the economic and local history of this period.
