The 1 Franc Note of the Évreux Chamber of Commerce is an emergency banknote issued in France, the issuance of which was formally recorded by a resolution dated 28 October 1920. This type of local fiduciary document is part of the context of emergency currency issues that multiplied in France during and after the First World War, in response to shortages of metallic and official fiduciary currency.
French Chambers of Commerce were authorised to issue such notes in order to address the monetary circulation difficulties encountered at a local and regional level. The Évreux Chamber of Commerce, a representative institution of the commercial and industrial interests of the Eure department, thus proceeded to issue this note with a face value of 1 franc.
These regional emergency banknotes are today considered first-rate historical and economic testimonies, reflecting the monetary tensions of post-war France. They generally bear the legal mentions relating to their issuer, the face value, as well as references to the resolution that authorised them ? elements that allow their precise identification and dating.
From a numismatic point of view, this note belongs to the category of chamber of commerce banknotes, also referred to as local or regional paper money. These issues, although not emanating from the Banque de France, had legal tender status within their circulation area and were accepted as a means of payment by merchants and private individuals in the region concerned.
This note represents a typical example of French emergency numismatics from the immediate post-war period, a particularly rich era for such issues throughout the entire national territory.
