Description

The 1 franc banknote issued by the Chambre de Commerce du Mans represents a significant historical testament to the turbulent period of World War I. Dated 8 July 1915 and belonging to the first series, this fiduciary document is part of the context of emergency currency issues that proliferated throughout France from the very beginning of the conflict.

In 1914, the general mobilisation and the widespread hoarding of metal coins had caused an acute shortage of small change. Faced with this situation, many French chambers of commerce were authorised to issue their own small-denomination banknotes in order to compensate for the lack of liquidity in circulation. The Chambre de Commerce du Mans, representing the department of Sarthe, took part in this effort by producing this 1915 issue.

This type of banknote, commonly referred to as an emergency note or local paper currency, circulated exclusively within the geographical area under the authority of the issuing body, in this case the territory administered by the Chambre de Commerce du Mans. These documents generally bear the legal particulars of the issuing organisation, the face value, the date of issue, and the signatures of the authorised officials, all of which guarantee their authenticity and validity.

From the perspective of preservation and numismatic study, these chamber of commerce banknotes are highly sought-after pieces among collectors specialising in notaphily, the branch of numismatics dedicated to banknotes and paper currency. Their appeal lies as much in their documentary and historical value as in their fleeting economic role.
