This 50 centimes note was jointly issued by the Chambers of Commerce of Mâcon and Bourg, dated 1st September 1915. It is part of the particular context of the First World War, a period during which the shortage of metallic currency led many French chambers of commerce to issue their own necessity notes in order to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation.

These local issues, commonly known as necessity notes or emergency paper currency, represented a pragmatic response to the economic difficulties caused by the conflict. The chambers of commerce held official authorisation to carry out these issues, thereby ensuring the continuity of commercial exchanges at a local and regional level.

The association of the Chamber of Commerce of Mâcon, the prefecture of the Saône-et-Loire department, and that of Bourg, corresponding to Bourg-en-Bresse in the Ain department, reflects a cooperation between two neighbouring economic entities to pool their resources and ensure better distribution of these notes within their respective trading areas.

The face value of 50 centimes corresponds to a small denomination note, particularly useful for everyday transactions. This type of note circulated alongside other denominations issued by the same chambers or by similar organisations throughout France, forming an essential supplementary monetary system at the time.

From a collector's perspective, these regional necessity notes attract considerable interest among French notaphily enthusiasts, owing to their historical significance and strong territorial roots. They stand as direct testimonies of the economic mechanisms put in place during the Great War and represent a significant part of the numismatic and documentary heritage of this period.
