Description
This 50 centimes note was issued in 1915 by the Chambre de Commerce de Valence et de la Drôme, in the particular context of the First World War. This period of conflict led to a widespread shortage of metallic currency in France, as metals were requisitioned for the war effort. Faced with this situation, many French chambers of commerce were authorised to issue local emergency notes in order to compensate for the lack of currency in circulation.
This type of note, commonly known as an emergency note or necessity currency, had a face value of 50 centimes and circulated locally in the Valence region and the Drôme department. It belongs to Series A, indicating that it is one of the first series put into circulation by this institution.
The Chambre de Commerce de Valence et de la Drôme, an institution representing local economic interests, thus assumed a temporary monetary role, issuing these fiduciary notes to meet the immediate needs of commercial exchange in the region. These notes were guaranteed by the issuing chamber and accepted as a means of payment within their area of circulation.
Emergency notes from this era now constitute historical and numismatic testimonies of the highest order, illustrating the local economic adaptations put in place during the Great War. Their documentary value lies both in their age, the relative rarity of certain series, and the regional economic history they embody. This note from Series A of 1915 thus represents one of the first issues produced by the Valence chamber of commerce in this exceptional context.
