Description

The 1 franc banknote issued by the Chambers of Commerce of Aveyron represents a major historical and numismatic testimony from the First World War period. Dated 12 March 1915, this emergency note was put into circulation in the department of Aveyron to address the shortage of metallic currency that was affecting France at the beginning of the conflict.

During this period, many French Chambers of Commerce were authorised to issue their own substitute currency, also known as emergency money or local fiduciary currency. These issues were intended to maintain commercial exchanges in the regions, in the face of the scarcity of metal coins, whose metal was being requisitioned for the war effort.

The inscribed date, 12 March 1915, places it precisely in the first months following the outbreak of the war, when civil authorities were seeking quick solutions to meet the monetary needs of the population.

From a numismatic point of view, this type of emergency note is particularly sought after for its historical and regional character. It illustrates local economic organisation in times of crisis and demonstrates the ability of commercial institutions to take on monetary functions in exceptional circumstances. The face value of 1 franc corresponded to a common denomination, suited to everyday transactions. This note belongs to a category of paper money documents that occupy a specific place in the French monetary history of the early 20th century.
