Description

This series of Chilean banknotes comprises five polymer denominations: 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos, issued over the period 2014?2025. The use of a polymer substrate, replacing traditional cotton paper, gives these banknotes greater durability as well as superior resistance to moisture and everyday wear.

Each denomination in this series highlights iconic personalities and symbols from Chilean history and culture. The 1,000 peso note features the portrait of Ignacio Carrera Pinto, a military hero of the War of the Pacific. The 2,000 peso note depicts Manuel Rodríguez Erdoíza, a key figure in Chilean independence. The 5,000 peso note bears the effigy of Ignacio Domeyko, scientist and rector of the University of Chile in the 19th century. The 10,000 peso note honours Arturo Prat Chacón, captain of the national navy who fell during the naval battle of Iquique in 1879. Finally, the 20,000 peso note is dedicated to Andrés Bello, a Venezuelan-Chilean jurist, poet and intellectual who played a fundamental role in the institutional organisation of Chile.

Polymer banknotes incorporate security features specific to this type of substrate, including transparent windows, raised printing and optically variable devices designed to combat counterfeiting. The Banco Central de Chile, the issuing institution, oversaw the design and circulation of this series, which forms part of the country's ongoing modernisation of fiduciary means of payment.

The reverses of the banknotes illustrate landscapes, monuments or scenes representative of Chilean regions and national identity, further enriching the iconographic depth of this documentary collection on Chilean culture and history.
