Description

The 5 leva banknote issued by Bulgaria in 1999 pays tribute to one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century Bulgarian art, Ivan Milev (1897-1927). This Bulgarian painter and graphic artist, who died prematurely at the age of 30, is recognised for his unique body of work blending symbolism, Art Nouveau and Byzantine influences, which profoundly shaped the country's cultural and artistic identity.

The banknote belongs to the series of Bulgarian banknotes introduced following the monetary reform of 1999, a period during which Bulgaria revalued its national currency, the lev, in a context of economic stabilisation. This series is distinguished by its carefully crafted design, giving pride of place to Bulgarian personalities and cultural heritage.

The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Ivan Milev, reproduced with precision from well-known historical depictions of the artist. The overall graphic composition is directly inspired by his pictorial universe, particularly his illustrations and paintings characterised by rich ornamental motifs and references to Bulgarian religious and folk iconography. The reverse of the banknote generally incorporates elements drawn from Milev's artistic work, further strengthening the link between the monetary medium and the cultural heritage it represents.

The face value of this banknote is 5 leva, the official monetary unit of the Republic of Bulgaria. Designed for everyday circulation, this banknote incorporates security features in line with the standards of the time, aimed at preventing counterfeiting. It now constitutes a numismatic and philatelic document of interest, bearing witness both to Bulgarian monetary policy in the late 1990s and to the authorities' desire to anchor national identity within official monetary representations.
