Description
The 20 Bulgarian leva banknote issued in 2020 is a denomination of Bulgaria's national currency, the Bulgarian lev (BGN). This issue pays tribute to one of the most prominent political figures in modern Bulgarian history, Stefan Stambolov (1854-1895), a statesman who played a decisive role in consolidating the Bulgarian state following its liberation from Ottoman rule.
Stefan Stambolov served as Regent of Bulgaria from 1886 to 1887, and then as President of the Council of Ministers from 1887 to 1894. His portrait is prominently featured on this banknote, a testament to his importance in the building of modern Bulgaria. A revolutionary from his youth, he was one of the leaders of the national liberation movement before becoming one of the most influential and controversial politicians of his era.
The banknote bears a face value of 20 leva, making it an intermediate denomination within the current Bulgarian monetary system. Like all banknotes in circulation in Bulgaria, it is produced to rigorous standards incorporating security features designed to prevent counterfeiting, in line with the requirements of modern central banks.
The 2020 issue is part of the Bulgarian leva banknote series, in which each denomination is traditionally dedicated to an iconic figure from Bulgaria's historical, cultural or artistic heritage. This banknote thus serves as both a monetary and historical record, reflecting the commitment of the Bulgarian National Bank to preserving the memory of great national figures through its banknote issues.
