Description
The 500 Brunei dollar banknote issued in 2024 represents the highest denomination in the currency range of this Southeast Asian sultanate. It is made of polymer, a synthetic material that stands apart from traditional cotton paper through its increased durability, resistance to moisture and wear, as well as the advanced security features it offers against counterfeiting.
This banknote bears the portrait of Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei since 1967, the central figure of the country's absolute monarchy and one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world. His depiction on Bruneian banknotes is a constant feature of the sultanate's monetary policy, symbolising sovereign authority and the dynastic continuity of the Bolkiah house.
Brunei issues its own currency, the Brunei dollar (BND), managed by the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam. A notable feature is the currency interchangeability agreement between Brunei and Singapore, under which the Brunei dollar and the Singapore dollar are mutually accepted at par in both countries.
The use of polymer for this high-denomination note reflects a global trend adopted by many central banks for their widely circulated or high-value banknotes. This substrate allows for the integration of transparent windows and holographic elements, making fraudulent reproduction considerably more difficult than with a conventional paper substrate.
