Description

The 5 Brunei Darussalam dollar banknote, issued in 2024, belongs to the official monetary series of the Sultanate of Brunei. It is denominated in Brunei dollars, the country's official currency, and carries a face value of 5 dollars.

This banknote is made of polymer, a modern synthetic material used by many central banks around the world for the production of their banknotes. Polymer offers greater durability compared to traditional cotton paper, as well as better resistance to moisture and everyday wear. This type of substrate also allows for the integration of specific security features, including transparent windows, which are characteristic of contemporary polymer banknotes.

The banknote is associated with Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, whose portrait traditionally appears on the Sultanate's banknotes. Hassanal Bolkiah, whose full name is Muda Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, is the 29th Sultan of Brunei. He has held this title since 1967 and also serves as the country's Prime Minister. His depiction on banknotes is a constant feature of Bruneian numismatic production, reflecting his central role in the State.

Brunei Darussalam, a small state located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia, has its own monetary authority, the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD), which oversees the issuance of the national currency. The Brunei dollar has also been pegged at parity with the Singapore dollar since 1967, under a currency interchangeability agreement between the two countries.

This 2024 banknote thus represents a recent issue in the continuity of the Sultanate's monetary policy, adopting the polymer substrate to modernise its fiduciary instruments while maintaining the iconographic symbols characteristic of the Bruneian monarchy.
