Description
The 2 Reais banknote issued by Brazil in 2010 belongs to the commemorative series dedicated to Brazilian wildlife. This denomination honours the sea turtle, an emblematic species of the Brazilian coastline, several representatives of which are listed among the protected species in Brazil, notably through the TAMAR programme, a sea turtle conservation project established in the country.
The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of the Effigy of the Republic, an allegorical figure traditionally depicted on Brazilian banknotes, accompanied by the face value and the security features specific to banknotes of the Banco Central do Brasil. The reverse is dedicated to the illustration of the sea turtle, rendered with naturalistic precision, in an environment evoking its marine habitat.
This banknote was issued by the Banco Central do Brasil, the institution responsible for issuing and managing the national currency. It is part of the second family of reais banknotes, gradually introduced from the 2000s onwards, which is distinguished by iconography centred on the country's biodiversity, with each denomination associated with an animal representative of Brazilian fauna.
Its composition incorporates security features characteristic of modern banknotes, such as special inks, watermarks and microprinting designed to prevent counterfeiting. This banknote thus stands as both a monetary and cultural testament to Brazil's commitment to showcasing its natural heritage through its fiduciary issues.
