Description

The 20 taka banknote issued by Bangladesh in 2025 is part of the contemporary fiduciary monetary production of this South Asian country. The taka has been the official currency of Bangladesh since the country's independence in 1971, and banknotes of this denomination circulate regularly in the Bangladeshi economy.

This banknote honours the Kantajew Temple, also known as the Kantaji Temple, one of the most remarkable historical monuments in Bangladesh. Located in the Dinajpur district in the north of the country, this Hindu temple dedicated to Krishna and Kantaji was built in the early 18th century, mainly between 1704 and 1752, under the patronage of Maharaja Pran Nath and his son Ram Nath. The building is renowned for its terracotta-style architecture, characterised by an exceptionally rich ornamentation of terracotta panels depicting mythological, epic and everyday life scenes. This nine-spired temple, whose towers were damaged by an earthquake in 1897, remains one of the finest examples of classical Bengali architecture.

The choice to depict this monument on a banknote reflects the importance placed by the Bangladeshi authorities on promoting the country's architectural and cultural heritage through its monetary instruments. The Bangladesh Bank, the country's central bank, is the institution responsible for issuing national banknotes.
