Description

The 20 Australian dollar banknote from the BJ series, issued in 2019, is an official denomination of the Reserve Bank of Australia. It belongs to the seventh generation of Australian banknotes, characterised by advanced security features and a polymer design.

The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Mary Reibey (1777-1855), a major historical figure in Australia. Transported to New South Wales at the age of thirteen, she became a prosperous businesswoman and a recognised philanthropist, playing a significant role in the economic development of the Australian colony in the early 19th century.

On the reverse, the banknote pays tribute to Reverend John Flynn (1880-1951), founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. This Presbyterian missionary is celebrated for having established a network of aerial medical care for isolated populations in the Australian Outback, profoundly transforming access to healthcare in the country's remote regions.

This banknote is made from polypropylene polymer, a material developed in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of Australia and the University of Melbourne. This technology, pioneered by Australia, gives the banknote superior durability and resistance compared to cotton banknotes. It also incorporates several security features characteristic of this generation, including a transparent window adorned with a complex holographic image, micro-printing, and colour-shifting inks.

The BJ series refers to the signatures of the Reserve Bank of Australia officials appearing on the banknote at the time of its issue. The dominant colour palette of this banknote is red, a colour traditionally associated with this denomination in the Australian monetary system.
