Description

The 2 Argentine Pesos banknote belongs to Series D, issued between 2001 and 2002 by the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic. It is a denomination from the convertible peso banknote family, put into circulation during the particularly tense economic context Argentina was experiencing at the time, shortly before the major financial crisis of December 2001.

The banknote honours Bartolomé Mitre, an iconic figure in Argentine history. A general, statesman and writer, Mitre served as President of the Argentine Republic from 1862 to 1868 and played a central role in the consolidation of the modern Argentine state. He is also known for having founded the newspaper La Nación in 1870, one of the country's most influential dailies. His portrait has traditionally appeared on this face value, lending it a strong historical and symbolic dimension within the Argentine monetary system.

From a graphic standpoint, the banknote displays characteristics typical of Argentine issues of that era, featuring integrated security elements designed to combat counterfeiting, in line with the standards in force at the turn of the 2000s. The reverse of the banknote generally depicts the Casa Histórica de Tucumán, the site where Argentina's declaration of independence was signed on 9 July 1816, thus underscoring the heritage and historical significance of this denomination.
