Launched in 2014, the Wedge-tailed Eagle collection is based on the designs of John Mercanti. Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and an extremely prolific engraver. He created the largest number of coins and medals in the history of the U.S. Mint. Since his retirement, he has continued to work on this series with the Australian Perth Mint. Initially close to heraldic representations, his design has evolved towards a more naturalistic interpretation of the eagle.
