This 5 kwanzas banknote issued by the National Bank of Angola in 2012 features graphic elements and symbols significant to Angola's history and geography.
On the obverse, the portraits of two important political figures are highlighted: José Eduardo dos Santos (1942-), who was President of Angola from 1979 to 2017, and António Agostinho Neto (1922-1979), the first President of Angola from 1975 to 1979. The portrait of José Eduardo dos Santos appears in the background, while that of António Agostinho Neto is positioned in the foreground. To the right of the portraits is a decorative circle. The face value of the note, "5", is indicated on the left side. The inscriptions "BANCO NACIONAL DE ANGOLA" are also present, written in the Latin alphabet.
The reverse of the banknote depicts the Ruacana Falls, a waterfall located in the Kunene region of Angola. The face value, "CINCO KWANZAS", is inscribed at the top of the note. The national coat of arms of Angola is located on the left side.
The banknote's watermark depicts the statuette of "Kuku", commonly known as the Thinker. This wooden sculpture represents an old man sitting in a posture of deep meditation. For Angolans, the Kuku is more than just a craft item; it symbolizes wisdom, experience and knowledge.
This 5 kwanzas banknote is a testament to Angola's political and cultural history, highlighting important personalities and iconic natural elements of the country.
