The reunification of Germany was officially ratified on 3 October 1990, one year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which had divided Germany and the whole of Europe in two. The territory of the German Democratic Republic known as ?East Germany? officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany. 

San Marino is celebrating the 25th anniversary of German reunification with a commemorative ?2 coin designed by Erik Spiekermann, an internationally renowned German type designer and professor at Bremen University of the Arts. 

The coin depicts two representations of the Brandenburg Gate crossing like two hands, symbolising the reunification of the two peoples. This was the place where Germans from both sides came together after the demolition of the wall. This famous gate was completed in 1791 and during the Cold War was on the East Berlin side. Today it is Berlin's most famous monument.
