San-Marin is dedicating its first commemorative 2 euro coin of 2021 to the 450th anniversary of the painter Caravaggio.

Michelangelo Merisi was born in 1571 in Caravaggio, a village near Milan. A troubled and distressed painter, he was a genius who profoundly revolutionised the history of art, introducing the study of truth and the violent use of light as a metaphor for the grace of God. The obverse of the €2 coin issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Caravaggio's birth shows the repentant Magdalene from the homonymous work in the prestigious Galleria Doria Pamphilj in Rome. Denying her previous frivolous life, the young girl opens herself to divine grace with her hands delicately placed on her knees and the jewels left on the floor beside the jar of ointment. The single ray of light that crosses the canvas anticipates the dramatisations of the painter's mature phase, which will influence all later European painting.

Edge: striated and inscribed with a 2 followed by a star, all repeated six times, alternating right and left.
