Gian Lorenzo Bernini was born in 1598. He was a sculptor, painter, theatre director, playwright and draughtsman. In Rome, he was consecrated architect of Saint Peter's. His work is marked by its multidisciplinary nature (architecture, sculpture, painting). He established himself as one of the major representatives of Baroque art, extending his influence throughout Europe.

The coin issued by San Marino represents his famous sculpture "Bust of Costanza Bonarelli", housed in the Museo del Bargello in Florence, one of the most striking examples of Baroque art: the artist engraved in marble the vitality of this woman in her eyes.
