A pupil of Cimabue, Giotto was one of the greatest Italian painters and the initiator of a new style of Italian figurative art. His best-known works include the frescoes in the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi depicting the Stories of Saint Francis and the Cross of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, the frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. He was also a renowned architect; appointed architect of the Opera del Duomo in Florence, Giotto built the bell tower that bears his name.

The Republic of San Marino is celebrating the 750th anniversary of Giotto's birth by issuing a commemorative ?2 coin. The obverse of the coin produced by Luciana De Simoni depicts a detail of the tower of Florence Cathedral* on the left and a portrait of Giotto on the right.

*Giotto's Campanile is the bell tower of Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence's cathedral in Tuscany.
