After the October Revolution, he joined the Bolsheviks and fought in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. ?wierczewski also participated in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the Republicans. Serving under the name "Walter," he commanded the International Brigades, further enhancing his reputation as a dedicated communist activist.
