Ferdinand Marcos was a Filipino politician who served as the President of the Philippines for an extended period, from 1965 to 1986. He was initially elected president in 1965, then declared martial law in 1972, thereby establishing a dictatorship. During his authoritarian rule, Marcos and his wife Imelda were accused of massive corruption and abuse of power. In 1986, following a contested presidential election and massive popular demonstrations known as the "People Power Revolution," Marcos fled the country and went into exile in Hawaii, where he died in 1989.
