Anyone who thinks of Piet Mondrian immediately imagines the characteristic play of lines and primary colours that made the artist famous and eventually immortalised him. In 2022 it will be 150 years since Piet Mondrian was born. That is why the Royal Dutch Mint is minting a commemorative coin in honour of this revolutionary artist.

Born on 7 March 1872 in Amersfoort, Piet Mondrian grew up in a strict Calvinist family. His father was a teacher and did not want Piet Mondrian to become an artist. Mondrian trained as a drawing teacher but never gave up his dream. At the age of 18 he organised an exhibition of his own work.

At the beginning of his career Mondrian mainly painted portraits and landscapes. Around the age of 30 he became interested in theosophy, a discipline that sought a common ground between science, philosophy and religion. Mondrian developed an interest in geometric shapes. He considered them to be the basis of everything, despite the fact that these forms do not exist as such in nature. Mondrian's art gradually evolved towards abstraction. The search for "harmony and absolute beauty" through compositions of primary colours and horizontal and vertical lines marks Piet Mondrian's breakthrough and makes him the pioneer of abstract art.

The piece was designed by Marjolein Rothman. The designer sought an elementary translation of Mondrian's vision. Horizontal and vertical lines are the basic principles of his work and were used as a starting point for the design of the coin. The obverse shows the portrait of King Willem-Alexander. On the left side from top to bottom is the text 'King of the Netherlands'. On the underside from left to right is the text 'Willem-Alexander'. The two texts intersect, creating the same line play as we know from Mondrian.

The reverse side also contains a horizontal and vertical movement. The two lines on the background cross at the bottom of the picture. The text follows these lines. In one direction of the line is 1872, the year Mondrian was born. In the other direction is 2022, the year of Piet Mondrian's 150th birthday. The horizontal line is wider to give more weight to the composition and the name of Piet Mondrian above it.
