For the 30 years of the fall of the Berlin Wall the Monnaie de Paris opens the year 2019 with the issuance of a 2 euro commemorative coins with face values as well as collector coins dedicated to this major event of the end of the 20th century! All these coins will be issued by the Monnaie de Paris on the occasion of the World Money Fair in Berlin, the largest numismatic fair in the world, in early February 2019.

On this 10 euro coin, the face represents a section of the Berlin Wall falling. It opens with a crowd of Germans with their arms raised in victory. Three doves symbolising peace fly over the crowd with wings spread out in a V shape, once again a sign of victory. On the left side of the room is written on a section of the wall that is still standing: "30 Years of the Fall of the Wall - 30 Jahre Mauerfall".

Built on the night of 12-13 August 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the Berlin Wall or "Wall of Shame" for West Germany was built to stop the exodus of people to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). West and East Berlin were separated for more than 28 years, becoming a symbol of a Europe divided by the Iron Curtain. Many people who tried to cross the wall lost their lives because of the strong military presence. Indeed, it was more precisely two walls of 36 metres high with a 302 watchtower and alarm devices, 14,000 guards, 600 dogs and barbed wire stretching to the sky.

Following the weakening of the Soviet Union and the East German rebellion, the wall was abolished on 9 November 1989. It allowed the reunification of West and East Germany. The fall of the wall will remain engraved in the minds of entire generations. As a symbol of the ideological and political divide of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall has inspired many books and films. Several museums are also dedicated to it. The German capital still bears the scars of this "wall of shame".
