The great wealth of pictorial art in France over several centuries was an opportunity for Monnaie de Paris to start a new series that pays tribute to the greatest of the masterpieces in our museums. The different currents and influences - Renaissance Baroque Impressionism... - are celebrated. Each year, several works will be honoured. In 2021, Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl and Dali's Persistence of Memory will be honoured.
The front presents Salvador Dalí's famous work "The Persistence of Memory". The "museum masterpiece" stamp that defines this series has been added to the bottom right, blending in with the work. In the background is the façade of Beaubourg, where Salvador Dalí has been the subject of several exhibitions, most recently in 2013. The name of the work and the artist also complete the background. The year 2021 appears on the left.
The reverse is common to the series and features a mixture of views of several major French museums: top left is an interior view of the Musée d'Orsay, recognisable by its superb clock. Next to it is a view of the façade of the Louvre, visible from the Cour Napoléon (where the famous pyramid is located). Below these two elements is a fresco on the Hôtel Salé, which houses the Musée Picasso. The lower part of the reverse shows a view of the façade of the Hôtel Biron, now the Musée Rodin. Above this is the famous staircase of the Centre Pompidou. The face value and the words "République Française" are also inscribed on this reverse.
