After Slovenia, France took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union (PFUE) on 1 January 2022. To mark the occasion, the Monnaie de Paris has issued this €20 silver coin to commemorate the event.

Thirteen years after its last presidency, France leads the Council of the European Union for six months. Representing the Member States, the Council amends the Commission's legislative proposals in a co-decision process with the European Parliament. On behalf of the 27 Member States, France will therefore preside over one of the EU's seven most important institutions.

With the number of countries making up the Union increasing (from 6 to 27) and European issues becoming more complex, the presidency is becoming less frequent, which makes it all the more significant for the country.
