The history of independence begins with the American War of Independence, which broke out in 1775, and with La Fayette's arrival in Boston.

The obverse side features a profile portrait of the Marquis de La Fayette. The engraving is derived from an ancient medal, lending authenticity to the piece. The name Marquis de La Fayette along with his ranks are inscribed around the circumference of the coin. The €25 and €200 coins have an octagonal shape, which represents a technical feat and a cutting-edge innovation.

The reverse side depicts a coat of arms composed of the visual representation of the Hermione, the frigate used by La Fayette to travel to Boston. A standard where "Vivre libre ou mourir" (Live free or die) is inscribed floats above the coat of arms, demonstrating the conviction of the American colonists in claiming their independence.
