At the end of 1792, the louis bearing the effigy of Louis XVI was replaced by the Ecu de 6 Livres, the type "Au génie" engraved by Augustin Dupré (1748 - 1833). He began his career as an engraver at the Royal Arms Factory. Around 1770, he engraved his first medals. The French Revolution broke out in 1789. It first transformed the Kingdom of France into a constitutional monarchy, then into the First Republic. These changes of regime were accompanied by a monetary reform which led to a major change in the circulating currencies. A competition was held in 1791 to select the new designs, and Augustin Dupré won. He was appointed Engraver General of Coins in July 1791 and remained in this position until 1803. Minted in 1793, the Ecu de 6 Livres depicts on its face a genius engraving the Constitution. The reverse shows an oak wreath surrounding the value: SIX POUNDS.

The reverse depicts the revolutionary era with some of its major symbols: the storming of the Bastille, the National Guard (citizen militia, intended to maintain order) and the revolutionaries with their Phrygian cap or their characteristic charlotte. On the left side, there is a reproduction of the face and reverse of a 6-pound Ecu of 1793.

The face represents Roty's Sower in a more contemporary setting: surrounded by the 12 stars of the European flag, the female figure is framed by the French flag in heraldry (horizontal lines for blue, smooth for white, vertical lines for red), as well as the year on either side of her legs. The different names of the Monnaie de Paris and the Atelier de Gravure are located under the feet of the Sower, the word RF under her right arm.
