The 20 Franc Marianne Coq is an emblematic French bullion coin, symbolizing the Third Republic. Issued between 1870 and 1940, it bears witness to the era when the franc reigned supreme on the European continent.
Minted from 1898 to 1906, it features the inscription “Dieu protège la France” on its edge, later replaced by the Republican motto “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” from 1907 to 1914, marking the separation of Church and State.
This gold coin, prized by investors, can be divided into two periods:
- The first, from 1899 to 1906, with a mintage of 43 million, featured the inscription “Dieu protège la France” (“God protects France”). From 1905, it adapted to the separation of Church and State.
- The second type, minted from 1907 to 1914, featured the motto “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” on its edge, symbolizing a profoundly republican coin for its time.
