As usual, the Vatican Mint celebrates the sacrament of baptism with the €10 gold coin, the design of which was entrusted to artist Patrizio Daniele.
On the reverse of the coin, John the Baptist is shown pouring water from a shell onto Jesus' head. The use of a shell is linked to Christian tradition, where the shell is a symbol of life and resurrection, rebirth and purification. As Pope Francis has said, at baptism "it is God who enters into us, who purifies, who heals our hearts, who makes us his children for ever". (7 January 2024)
