Mingdao were so named because of the character engraved on the blade. This character was traditionally identified as 'Ming'. However, a new interpretation has recently emerged, suggesting that the character could be interpreted as "Yi". Indeed, from 360BC, the city of Yi was the capital of the Yan kingdom, which used these knives.
