Dom Pedro I, also known as Pedro I of Brazil and Pedro IV of Portugal, was the founder of the Brazilian Empire and the first Emperor of Brazil. He was born on October 12, 1798, and was the son of King John VI of Portugal. His mother, Queen Carlota Joaquina, was of Spanish origin.
Dom Pedro I played a crucial role in Brazilian history by proclaiming the country's independence from Portugal. In 1822, while serving as regent of Brazil on behalf of his father who had returned to Portugal, he decided to remain in Brazil and defy attempts to restore Portuguese rule. On September 7, 1822, he uttered the famous "Cry of Ipiranga," declaring Brazil's independence from Portugal.
He then became the first Emperor of Brazil as Dom Pedro I. However, his reign was short and tumultuous. He faced internal conflicts, political tensions, and economic difficulties. Eventually, in 1831, after a series of crises, Dom Pedro I abdicated in favor of his son, Dom Pedro II, and returned to Portugal.
His reign and controversial personality have left a profound impact on Brazilian history. While some view him as a courageous and patriotic leader for proclaiming Brazilian independence, others criticize him for his sometimes autocratic actions and the conflicts he engendered.
