Deodoro da Fonseca, whose full name is Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, was a Brazilian military officer and statesman. He was born on August 5, 1827, and died on August 23, 1892. He is best known for his role in the transition of Brazil from an Empire to a Republic.

Deodoro da Fonseca served in the Brazilian army for many years and rose to the rank of Marshal. He played a significant role in the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), a major conflict in South America. His military reputation earned him some prominence in Brazil.

On November 15, 1889, Deodoro da Fonseca led a military coup that overthrew Emperor Dom Pedro II and ended the Brazilian Empire. He then assumed the provisional presidency of Brazil and became the country's first president under the new republic.

However, Deodoro da Fonseca's presidency was short and tumultuous. He took controversial actions, including the dissolution of the National Congress, which led to protests. Faced with this opposition and escalating political tensions, he resigned from the presidency on November 23, 1891, marking the end of his term and paving the way for other republican leaders.

Although his presidential rule was brief, Deodoro da Fonseca remained a key figure in Brazil's transition from monarchy to republic and contributed to shaping the early years of the country's new political era.
