From the USA to Japan, from Australia to Greenland... The whole world knows the name of the most famous statue in Brussels: the Manneken Pis. A fountain barely 60 cm high depicting a mischievous little boy urinating, this emblematic monument is located in the Rue de l'Étuve just off the Grand-Place in the Belgian capital. It attracts millions of tourists every year, and is of course the subject of countless holiday photos. Manneken Pis is the work of Jérôme Duquesnoy, a sculptor at the court of Archdukes Albert and Isabelle. The bronze statue no doubt symbolises the many tanneries of the time, where the urine of young children - with its high ammonia content - was used to make the leather more supple. But Manneken Pis also has a gigantic wardrobe of over 900 costumes. So Manneken Pis is 400 years old in 2019, and the Royal Mint of Belgium is celebrating in its own way!
