Maria Remedios del Valle

Maria Remedios del Valle (1766-1847), nicknamed ?The Captain? and ?Mother of the Homeland?, was a heroine of Argentina's War of Independence. Born in Buenos Aires, she took an active part in the struggle for independence against Spanish colonial forces. She followed the troops of General Manuel Belgrano and distinguished herself by her courage in caring for the wounded and participating directly in the fighting. Captured by the Spanish, she was tortured but never betrayed her compatriots. After the war, she lived in poverty and oblivion until her contributions were officially recognized and she received a government pension.

Manuel Belgrano

Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820) is one of the most important figures in Argentine history. Lawyer, economist, soldier and politician, he is best known for having created the Argentine flag on February 27, 1812. Born in Buenos Aires, he studied in Spain before returning to Argentina to become involved in public affairs. He played a key role in the War of Independence, leading patriot forces against the Spanish. Belgrano was also a social and educational reformer, advocating improved education and women's rights. His contribution to the nation is commemorated every year on June 20, Flag Day in Argentina.

Both are symbols of courage and dedication to the independence and development of Argentina.
